Media Advisory: SpaceWorks EC Survey Results Reveal High Market Demand for Integrated, Web-Based B2B EC Solution
85% of Respondents Seek Significant Enhancements within the Next Six Month
Rockville, MD -- October 28, 1999 -- SpaceWorks, Inc.®, the experienced leader in business-to-business, sell-side Web commerce software, today announced the results of its "5 Easy EC Questions" survey,
which was conducted earlier this month at Gartner Group’s IT Expo — a leading Internet technology conference. Slightly more than half of survey respondents, at 57 percent, were responsible for E-Commerce strategies at companies with more than $1 billion in revenues, with the manufacturing industry as the largest single sector represented.
About half of the companies surveyed currently do not sell their products over the Web, confirming the significant market potential for Internet commerce solutions. Of the 47 percent of respondents that do currently market and sell their products over the Web, 60 percent have in-house solutions. Eighty-five percent of the total respondents stated that they plan to upgrade or enhance their Web-commerce capabilities within the next six months however, reaffirming the demand for extensible and flexible solutions found in packaged applications such as SpaceWorks OrderManager.
The top three desired features were customer service capabilities (at 48 percent), e-marketing (at 42 percent) and order management (at 39 percent). Respondents chose more than one answer in most cases, underlining the importance of a comprehensive Web solution delivering on a variety of customer facing capabilities. According to the survey, large budgets are being set aside for achieving these EC visions; 55 percent of respondents have spent or plan to spend more than a quarter of a million dollars for their Web-based solution. In fact, more than one quarter of the respondents have budgeted more than $1 million.
Ninety-two conference attendees completed the survey. Survey respondents fell into "hot" EC adopter categories, with 40 percent from the manufacturing industry. The rest of the categories spanned key business sectors including wholesalers and distributors, telecommunications, financial services, utilities and government. Sixty-one percent of the manufacturing respondents indicated a strong desire for Web-based order management capabilities.
