JAVA Boosts Latest Version of SpaceWorks OrderManager --

Version 4.0 of OrderManager Utilizes Server-Side Java To Ensure Integrity of Business Rules, Maximize Interoperability and Internationalize EC Solutions

INTERNET COMMERCE EXPO/LOS ANGELES  -- September 23, 1998 -- Booth #55/Internet Open - With the announcement today of version 4.0 of its award-winning OrderManager software (see separate news release), SpaceWorks, Inc.—a leading innovator in the Extranet Commerce (EC) arena-offers a new concept, called JavaRules technology, to provide the most advanced and powerful EC architecture to date.

FORTUNE 1000 companies now have the ability to solve three of the most fundamental issues handicapping enterprise-wide EC deployments:

1. ensuring the integrity of "home- grown" business rules, particularly during product upgrades;

2. interoperating with existing hardware/software systems; and,

3. implementing EC solutions that seamlessly extend to global market requirements, languages and currencies.

The innovative use of server-side Java in OrderManager 4.0 leaps these hurdles, while providing platform neutrality, proven system security, an easy upgrade path and customization capabilities that tap a rich menu of value-added features.

"Thanks to the high-performance Java technologies offered by OrderManager, Corporate America can-finally-be assured of the ability to implement a Web-based EC solution that has the flexibility and resilience to meet the current and long-term needs of the company's sales and purchasing systems here, and abroad," said Dave MacSwain, president and CEO of SpaceWorks.

JavaRules technology provides significant OrderManager enhancements including:

Guaranteed Integrity - OrderManager 4.0's JavaRules technology classifies and subsequently shields the unique business rules that define the characteristics, workflow properties and fulfillment of Internet/Extranet- based orders. With version 4.0, customers' custom business rules are implemented as Java classes, and can be completely isolated from OrderManager's out-of-the-box functionality and user interface templates—ensuring the integrity of these pre-defined, mission- critical practices throughout future upgrades of the Electronic Commerce software.

Enhanced Interoperability - Java's built-in platform neutrality bolsters SpaceWorks ability to provide high performance, highly scalable solutions that can be deployed on both Windows NT and UNIX platforms alike-as well as heterogeneous combinations of both of the popular operating systems.

"New Java libraries are helping to provide the most advanced and practical interoperability options available in any architecture," said Lindsay Ridgeway, SpaceWorks senior vice president and chief technology officer. "Most corporations have deployed Internet, transaction-oriented and security systems in a decentralized fashion, on both new ERP systems and legacy, home-grown platforms. Java is the best choice in today's market to bridge these disparate technologies- creating an integrated Electronic Commerce framework that can positively impact the operations of both our customers and their supply chain partners."

EC Internationalization - With Java, OrderManager includes tools and methodologies that support internationalization. For example, pre- defined Java methods convert date and currency fields appropriately for a variety of international languages- taking dramatic steps toward truly global EC. Thus, trading partners in various countries can select the language of choice without requiring customer programming, time or effort.

"As America's businesses look to the future of electronic commerce, they need to be assured of a solution that can move with them all the way from the back-end system integration phase to full-blown sales and purchasing automation-into the next millennium and beyond," said EC expert David Alschuler of the Aberdeen Group. "SpaceWorks OrderManager 4.0, with JavaRules technology, fully meets this demand and serves as a prime example of a truly forward-marching electronic commerce application."
